6.4 Liter Diesel

Here are some common issues that arise within 6.4 Liter trucks:

  • With stock tuning, the PCM controls the regeneration of the diesel particulate filter. When the PCM determines that the DPF needs to be cleaned, it will display a message on the instrument cluster to “drive to clean exhaust”. It does this by injecting extra fuel into the cylinder during the exhaust stroke. Over time, the DPF is no longer able to regenerate 100%. If not addressed, catastrophic damage can be caused due to lack of lubrication that can damage the engine. Oil level will rise and fuel will dilute the oil. Once that happens, full bottom end overhaul will be necessary.
  • Sticking a VGT actuator on the high pressure turbocharger can cause a lack of power and check engine light.
  • Coolant leakage not addressed right away can cause front timing cover cavitation of the water pump housing.
  • Long cranks during hot start can be caused by worn fuel injectors and/or other high pressure fuel components.
